Air conditioning outside cooling unit

1. Know your air filter replacement frequency

Every cooling system has unique qualities that contribute to shorter or longer filter change requirements. These are affected by the severity of the outside temperature and humidity as well as your individual comfort zone--the thermostat setting that you find most comfortable.

If your residence is typically dusty or you enjoy keeping the windows open and the cooling system off during cool periods of the season, you will need to replace the filter(s) more often.

2. Learn where your filter is located in the return or filter-grill

Becoming familiar with the exact location the filter is installed is important if you want to stay on top of the job of keeping your filter performance at its peak. Some systems have been set up to simply open the return filter grill located in the ceiling or on the wall to access and replace the filter, while others require you to remove screws at the air handler.

3. Use the best quality filter you can for maximum performance

Years ago we used flat, fiberglass air filters known in the industry as "rock stoppers" because they were relatively ineffective at catching anything finer than small rocks.

Today, we have progressed to high quality filter media which is "pleated" and designed with many times the surface area of the original flat filters. This enables the material to be finer and and allows the filter to "catch" much more material for condsiderably longer.

The highest cost filters typically do the best job keeping your equipment (evaporator coils, blowers, furnaces, etc.) working at peak efficiency when they are replaced at the proper intervals.

4. Inspect your filter every month to determine the replacement date

It is recommended to remove and inspect your filter on a regular basis, especially when the system is new to you. Whether you have just moved into a new home or the system is brand new, there is no better way to gage the rate at which your system is depositing dirt and dust on the filter.

For example, you might be able to replace the filter only once every cooling season if the air handler is not utilized for heating as well. Conversely, the filter might require replacement every 2-3 months all year long. Regular inspection is the only way to know for sure.

5. Replace your filter as soon as it is visibly discolored

Time for a brief physics lesson: if your filter has, for example, 500,000 tiny openings when new, airflow will be normal and the velocity (speed) of the air moving through each opening is relatively slow. As the filter gets dirty, many of those openings will become clogged increasing the velocity of air through the remaining openings. This has the capability of pulling dirt through the filter or at the very least, inhibiting the adequate total flow of air through the system and into your living space.

The result: reduced cooling capacity and system efficiency. NOT what you want from your air conditioning system on a sweltering, humid day.
